While trendsetters look for tomorrow’s next food fad, nutritionists are encouraging us to look at our favourite fruits and veggies as today’s super foods.
Take potatoes, for instance, which are high in essential vitamins and minerals, low in fat and a potent source of antioxidants. Potatoes bring far more to the table than just carbohydrates.
So let’s make the most of our spuds and make our food and our budget go further – here are some great tips to reduce your waste.
- Meal planning is a fantastic way to reduce your food waste and avoid buying food you are not going to use within its shelf life. Check out our database of over 170 free recipes to get your started (QR Code)
- Store your spuds correctly – we have a great article on this on our website at the link: How to Store Potatoes
- Don’t peel your potatoes – level up the nutritional quality of your spuds and reduce your waste by keeping the peel on.
- If you DO feel the need to peel, then save your peels and give them a quick toss in olive oil and salt and throw them in the air fryer for 5-10 minutes for a delicious crispy snack. Or else they are great for adding to a pot with other peels to make veggie stock.
- Got left over mash? We have heaps of recipe ideas to use it up the next day like these below. If you’re not ready to use it the next day, you can also freeze mash for another day.

- Sprouting spuds? They are fine to eat as long as they are not green or soft. Just cut off those sprouts and proceed as planned.
