22 Sep Amazing chips and where to find them by Liz Sheehan
Maybe you’re the person who likes to fight over the little crispy end bits or maybe the big fat fluffy chippies are more your thing? Whichever way you like them, hand cut chips made from WA potatoes are always a straight-up win.
If you’ve been craving chips that taste like real potatoes, keep reading to find out where to score them in Perth.
Big Dog’s Burgers
54 Walter Road West, Bedford
https://bigdogsburgers.mobi2go.com
Burger joints are on every corner these days and while they’ve dragged Perth into the modern era when it comes to beef patties between buns, there’s not many that are giving the old chip the same attention.
Neighbourhood burger shop Big Dog’s is one place that is going the extra mile. On any given day, the pass is lined with trays of hand cut maris pipers, drying after being blanched in oil. After this they’ll be cooked two more times, producing superb triple cooked, skin-on chips that are crunchy in all the right places.
Add chips and a drink to any burger for a fiver but if you’re not in the mood for a burg… then the loaded fries are well worth ordering. They come topped with 150g chopped beef patty, salsa, jalapeños, coriander, spring onion, sour cream and homemade cheesy sauce. They’re a bit like nachos, only better.
Grand Lane Fish House
135 Barrack Street, Perth

Old school fish and chips aren’t just for the suburbs. Located in the heart of the CBD is Grand Lane Fish House, with owner and British ex-pat Paul passionate about bringing a “taste of home” to Perthites.
He sources maris pipers from Manjimup and cooks them twice to produce a chip that will take Brits right back to their fave chippy in ol Blighty. They’re crispy on the edges, fluffy in the middle and heaven when topped with McDonnells curry sauce and grated cheese.
As well as the famed, “chips and curry sauce”, there’s the full spectrum of British fish and chip shop staples like mushy peas, North Atlantic cod, haggis and battered sausage.
If you’re on the move, order the hand cut chips in a cone with one of the homemade sauces. Joppiesaus is a must for anyone who’s been to the Netherlands – if you know, you know.
The Galway Hooker
148 The Esplanade, Scarborough (at The Rendezvous hotel)
https://thegalwayhooker.com.au
Take a look inside this Irish pub and you’ll see they are as authentic as they come. It doesn’t stop at the decor, the menu is filled with Galway Bay inspired pub classics and there’s a whole section dedicated to potatoes. These guys don’t mess around!
A signature steak dish needs some signature steak chips. Angus sirloin topped with a moreish peppercorn sauce that’s infused with Bushmills irish whiskey comes served with field mushrooms, tomato and fat golden chips. Maris pipers are great for crunch and a fluffy centre but when they aren’t available, blues are the potato of choice for these chubby chippies.
Enjoy with a glass of Cab Sav from Credaro in Margaret River while watching the sun set over magnificent Scarborough beach. It’s good craic!
Le Rebelle
676 Beaufort St, Mt Lawley
Chips aren’t just for pubs, burger joints and fish and chip shops. This Mount Lawley French-leaning bistro makes royal blues shine as pomme frites… thin cut of course. Chef Liam Atikinson has created his version of Old Bay seasoning and when asked what was in it,
the answer? “Bay leaves, paprika… and the rest is a secret.” It gave the frites a little kick of spice and a certain je ne sais quoi.
Frites come served with steak tartare, marrying perfectly with the bright flavour of this classique French starter. Pop the bright yolk and mix it in with a bunch of frites – bliss.
Fall-off-the-bone Wagin duck is another classique loaded with frites and a bearnaise sauce good enough to drink. There’s plenty of pan juices to soak up with the French fries too. This dish is immensely satisfying and could be the best thing on the menu.
Frites and bearnaise can also be added as a side – do it. You won’t regret it.
The Great British Chippy
Butler, Karrinyup, Currambine, Ellenbrook
https://www.britishchippy.com.au/
From the shop fit out, to the cod and hand cut chips, mushy peas, battered sausages and pickled onions The Great British Chippy is a taste of home for our British and Irish ex-pats. This chippy used to be a secret of the northern coastal suburbs but word got out and now they’ve expanded to four shops with the most recent opening in Ellenbrook.
When in season, maris pipers are the preferred choice but no matter what, they always source WA potatoes for their hand cut chips. These guys chew through 10 tonnes of local spuds a month!
Golden and soft, these baton shaped babies go well dipped in curry sauce or simply as part of traditional fish and chips. No wonder people drive from far and wide to get their fix of the Great British Chippy.
