01 Jul WA Potatoes Gets Behind the Pledge for More Veg
Here at WA Potatoes, we have always believed in the power of vegetables to transform the health and wellbeing of Australians. So when we heard about the Pledge for More Veg — a national movement to get every Australian eating more vegetables every single day — we were fully on board. Here is everything you need to know about this exciting initiative and why we think Western Australians should get behind it.
What Is the Pledge for More Veg?
The Pledge for More Veg is a national call-to-action led by Plus One Serve, a program dedicated to increasing Australia’s vegetable consumption by 2030. The goal is beautifully simple: encourage every Australian to add just one extra serve of vegetables to their daily diet.
The Pledge was officially launched at Parliament House and is championed by celebrated Australian chef, restaurateur and fourth generation farmer Matt Moran AM, who serves as Ambassador for Plus One Serve. Since its launch, the movement has attracted over 100 new signatories at Hort Connections 2026 alone — with individuals, schools, retailers, growers, workplaces, health organisations and government bodies all joining the cause.
The core message is that every single action counts. Whether it is adding an extra handful of vegetables to a weeknight dinner, a school canteen introducing more vegetable-based options, or a retailer committing to promote vegetables more prominently — collectively, these efforts drive lasting, meaningful change.
Why Does It Matter?
The reality is that most Australians are simply not eating enough vegetables. Despite vegetables being one of the most nutritious, affordable and accessible food groups available, the majority of us fall well short of the recommended daily intake. This has significant consequences for long-term health, with poor vegetable consumption linked to higher rates of chronic disease, reduced energy and a range of preventable health conditions.
The Plus One Serve Pledge is designed to tackle this challenge head-on — not by overhauling the way Australians eat overnight, but by making small, sustainable changes that add up to a big national impact over time.
For WA Potatoes, this hits very close to home. Our growers work hard every single day to deliver fresh, nutritious, locally grown potatoes to Western Australian families — and we know that potatoes play an important role in helping Australians meet their vegetable intake goals. Potatoes are one of the most widely eaten vegetables in the country, and with good reason. They are affordable, versatile, filling and packed with essential nutrients including fibre, vitamin C, potassium and B vitamins.
Who Can Take the Pledge?
One of the things we love most about the Pledge for More Veg is that it is genuinely inclusive. It is designed for everyone across the vegetable ecosystem, including:
Individuals who want to commit to adding more vegetables to their daily snacks and meals.
Community-based facilities and businesses that can take action to increase the provision and consumption of vegetables in their settings.
Schools, healthcare providers and institutions that can embed vegetables more deeply into their menus, canteens and food policies.
Retailers and food service providers who can commit to increasing the visibility, accessibility and promotion of vegetables for their customers.
Government and health sector organisations with a role to play in policy, advocacy and driving systemic change.
No matter who you are or what role you play in the food system, there is a way to get involved and make a meaningful contribution.
The Four Impact Areas
The Pledge for More Veg is structured around four key impact areas that reflect the breadth and ambition of the program:
Health and Wellbeing — improving diet quality, reducing chronic disease incidence and supporting the physical and mental wellbeing of all Australians through better nutrition.
Equity and Access — ensuring that all Australians, including those in underserved, regional and remote communities, can access and enjoy fresh vegetables every day.
Environment and Social Impact — building more sustainable and nutritious food systems, reducing food waste and creating stronger, more resilient communities.
Growers and Supply Chain — increasing demand for Australian-grown vegetables to strengthen farm gate returns, create jobs and support thriving regional communities right across the country.
For us here at WA Potatoes, that fourth impact area is particularly meaningful. Every extra serve of vegetables eaten by a Western Australian is a direct investment in the livelihoods of our local growers and farming families. Supporting the Pledge for More Veg is not just about health — it is about supporting the people who grow our food.

What Can You Do Starting Today?
You do not need to be a large organisation to make a difference. Here are some simple, practical ways that Western Australian families and potato lovers can start adding more vegetable serves to their daily lives right now:
Add a handful of greens to your next bowl of mash — spinach, kale or peas all work beautifully and boost the nutritional value of every spoonful.
Try one of our vegetable-packed potato recipes, such as our Potato, Kale and Cheese Pie, Vegan Potato and Field Mushroom Bake, or our Vegetarian Moussaka — all of which are loaded with vegetables alongside WA-grown potatoes.
Swap out a snack for a vegetable-based option — our Stuffed Potato Cakes with broccolini and capsicum are a great place to start.
Encourage your children’s school to explore the Plus One Serve resources and consider signing the Pledge at an institutional level.
And most importantly — take the Pledge yourself. It takes less than five minutes and sends a powerful message that Western Australians are committed to eating well, eating local and supporting the growers who feed our state.
